Working From Home Tips
This unprecedented time has forced many people into working from home, an unknown territory for their work, where to stay productive and focused on work may prove to be difficult.
We have put together 10 simple tips for you on how to stay productive and motivated while working from home!
1. Morning Routine is Important
Just like you would with any other Monday morning, waking up and getting yourself ready to go into work. You should do the same when working from home. Mirroring the same routine while working at home will help get your mind ready for work as it normally would. It may be a different type of routine such as going for a walk to get your mind awake or waking at 7 am and making a cup of coffee and reading. Experiment different morning routines to find that one that works best for you.
2. Air Quality is Important
“Indoor air is often 10 times more polluted than outdoor air and as people spend 90% of their door indoors the importance of indoor air quality is critical to health and well-being” - Air Quality News. Throughout the day it is important to have fresh air circulating to provide fresh oxygen for a refreshed mind. Open a window in your home to let that fresh air in!
3. Move Your Body
Every hour or so, walk around and stretch your legs and arms. At lunchtime, go for a 30 minute walk to restart your brain and give your body a chance to become physically active as well as mentally active.
4. Plan Breaks
Just like you would working in the office, plan when you will have a lunch or snack break. Naturally in the office, you know what time’s you would have lunch, do the same at home. This provides continuity and you will become more productive knowing you have food waiting for you when you finish a task.
5. Remove Your Distractions
Technology is a blessing right now, providing you the opportunity to work from home. However, your phone right now could be your biggest distraction. Social media is a big distraction so maybe turn off your notifications on your phone while working during the day. Many of us use our phones for work so try and keep yourself focused on your phone with work related tasks.
6. Work When You’re Most Productive
Utilise your most productive periods and save your harder complex tasks for when you know you’ll be in the right head space for them. Slower points of the day should be used to smash out the easier, logistical tasks that are also on your plate.
7. Match Your Music To The Task At Hand
During the week, music is the soundtrack to your career. At work, the best playlists are diverse playlists. You can listen to music that matches the energy of the project you’re working on. For example, lyric-free music is designed to help you focus on more complex tasks!
8. Pick a Definitive Finishing Time Each Day
You might be under the impression that working from home establishes more work-life balance, but be careful with that assumption. You can get so caught up in your work, in a relaxing environment, that you lose complete track of time. Working in the office, coworkers packing up and leaving the office reminds you to do the same. Set an alarm at the end of the day to indicate your normal work day is coming to an end. You don’t have to stop at exactly that time, but knowing the work day is technically over can help you start the process of saving your work and calling it quits for the evening.
9. Prepare Your Meals The Night Before
When you’re in your own home, it can be tempting to spend time preparing a really nice breakfast and lunch for yourself, chopping and cooking included. Preparing food ahead of time ensures you can actually use your meal times to eat, and that you aren’t performing non-work tasks that spend energy better used at your desk.
10. Go To Bed With Purpose
It can become incredibly easy to have ‘just one more glass of wine’ because you’re working from home. Try to set a nightly routine where you write your goals and to-do list for the next day and go to bed with purpose.
